This
article mentions some of the creative and widely adopted
applications of the biometrics technology.
~In
the
United States
, biometrics is a crucial technology for the government
especially after the September 11 attack.
In 2005, the government has started on the
project of creating US passports with facial
(image-based) biometric data.
Though there still imposes a lot of difficulties
including privacy concerns and identity theft, the
American government is still determined to realize this
project.
~In
England
, an industrial design graduate, Louise Wilson, used
biometrics within handbags to enhance security.
A small fingerprint device is placed inside the
lining of the handbag which will unlock handbags upon
fingerprint match.
This anti-theft handbag works through a
rechargeable battery-powered biometrics-reader device
and stores fingerprint print details of registered bag
owners.
~Notebook manufacturers such as IBM are also
incorporating biometrics to prevent information theft.
In October, IBM introduced a fingerprint reader
built into its newest ThinkPad laptop, the ThinkPad T42.
A finger scan is required to gain log-on access to the
portable computer and its contents, delivering
simplified access to password-protected personal and
financial information, Web sites, documents and e-mail.
~In
Singapore
, biometrics were deployed in locker rooms of May Chia
Beauty and Slimming Specialist.
Patrons simply press the register button and scan
their fingerprints.
The enrollment and identification takes just a
few seconds and the system randomly assigns lockers.
When the customers are about to leave, they only
need to scan their fingerprints to open the locker and
retrieve their belongings.
~Biometrics
is also being implemented for time & attendance
tracking. This
not only eliminates buddy punching but also safeguards
the premise from unwanted intruders.
The
applications mentioned above are just some of the
applications where biometrics plays an important role,
and these can yet expand as the possibilities biometrics
can bring are infinite.
Most
of the applications described within this article were
referenced from Wikipedia and A&S magazine.
